Fonson Frères began in 1827 as a manufacturer of ornamental equipment for the army, police, and fire brigade. With Belgium's independence in 1830, the demand for their products grew. The company, founded by Jean-Barthélemy and Jean-François Fonson, experienced great success, especially under the leadership of Jean-François' son Auguste.
Around 1900, the company introduced automatic engraving machines and became well-known for their commemorative medals. Jules Fonson, the last direct family member, enhanced the quality by collaborating with renowned Belgian sculptors. In 1974, Fonson was acquired by Fibru-Fisch N.V., and later in 2021, by P. De Greef, who thus united three historical Belgian medal brands.
Fonson is a brand of P. De Greef Medals BV.
